Participating Artists: Hyesoo Park, Sojung Jun The
world is perceptual. We humans perceive the world through our senses, carrying
on with our daily routines. Every moment, a barrage of sensory input
incessantly bombards our bodies within and beyond the reach of our
consciousness. We often forget the very fact that our lives are built upon such
perceptions, swept up in the throes of life, but ‘that which is sensed’ or ‘the
act of sensing’ is a rich source of inspiration for artists, serving as a
critical means to create as they strive to leave their traces by honing their
perceptual sensitivity. Through the process of interrelating art and sensation,
artists become ‘translators of senses’ but also ‘creators of new perceptions.’ re: Sense, the special exhibition of the Coreana
Museum of Art, in celebration of the museum’s fifteenth anniversary, calls
attention to this topic – that of sense. The two exhibiting artists, Hyesoo
Park and Sojung Jun, introduce artistic
experiments wherein they trans-mediate their own sensory experiences in the space
of the museum. Park, who has been presenting participatory artwork based on an
abiding interest in the daily fabrics of life, invites visitors to a combinatory
space comprising visual, auditory, and tactile factors in H.E.L.P. (2018), translating one’s own history of insomnia into a form
of sensory expression. Jun, who has been exploring the theme of synesthesia these
the past years, showcases a kind of platform whereat the findings and other
threads of thoughts are translated into and sensed through myriad layers
including books, videos, drawings, and spatial installation through the new project
Bouba Kiki (2018).
In
its continued thematic exploration of the ‘body,’ the museum sheds light on
more complex and multi-faceted senses such as the intersection or transference
of perceptions along with the artistic act of receiving and trans-mediating
different sensory input, going a step beyond approaches that focus on the five
primary senses in this special exhibition. Our objective is to re-illuminate
the textures of perceptions that we often overlook despite our familiarity with
them through artistic productions. We hope that re: Sense would serve as an opportunity for the visitors to be
reminded of sensory moments that we’ve encountered yet forgotten, as in
Proust’s famous episode with the madeleine, and reflect on our own selves as
perceptual beings. Hosted by_Coreana Museum of Art Supported by_Coreana Cosmetics Co., Ltd.
