The Coreana Museum of Art is hosting a solo exhibition of artist Sooyeon Hong, Drawn Elephant: Abstraction, from August 30 to October 29, 2022, to actively support the artistic practices of mid-career artists to illuminate creative attempts. The show also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the artist's career. Hong is known as a series of abstract paintings of layers and forms floating around in a monochromatic background. The artist’s own definition of ‘abstraction’ is to dredge up from her mind an elephant, that is, something imprinted on her memory or subconscious, or from a dream, and to show it in her own chosen expression. This exhibition offers a rare glimpse of the artist’s recent experimental and bold changes and invites us to take time to look at the introductory stage of the artist’s next chapter. Hong believes that two confronting notions such as dream/reality, time/space, past/future, life/death, and black/white coincide at some point between the extremes or pursue balance by instinct. It is a viewing point to trace how her artistic expression representing that point transforms into shapes through the imaging process. The exhibition occupies two gallery spaces, c-gallery(B1) and c-cube(B2) at the museum. In the c-gallery, one can encounter a variety of previous works which could be related to this show's theme. It shows the relationship between them and the new series of works, and how the artist’s work has evolved. In the c-cube, the main gallery for this show, the series of paintings titled Synchronicity is installed along with two newly produced videos.
