As celebrating the 10th anniversary of
Coreana Museum of Art, the exhibition from the permanent collection Flower
Garden⦁Landscape introduces fifty works of Korean artist so
as to illustrate various perspectives are made in them when encountering
scenery of the nature like flowers and grass, mountain and sea. Contrary to the
unworldly, contemplative landscape, those by Sangbum Lee, Gwansik Byun, Soohyun
Noh in the early 20th century illustrate what is observed by eyes in
real, en plain air, while paintings by Kichang Kim, Jongsang Lee extend the
traditional monochrome landscape painting to the colored ones and those artists
like Daewon Lee, Chikyun Oh, Byungchoon Park defines the Korean modern
landscape; these works of arts are not descriptive but reflective of the artist’s
perception on the nature.
In particular, the flower paintings by Ryun Heo,
Bakryun Heo, Eungno Lee are exhibited together with porcelains from the Koryo
Dynasty(918~1392) and the Chosun Dynasty(1392~1910) decorated with the same
motifs, unfolding the traditional iconographic system of spirit and fidelity,
grace and loyalty, offspring’s prosperity and wealth-and-honor in relation to
flowers and trees. As the works exhibited implies, the attitude of Korean
artists to look into the nature so as to comprehend the meaning of life would
suggest a new possibility of representation in landscape paintings.
