engender reality and meaning in a new dimension while archiving and montaging
images excerpted from films, documentaries, web pages, and television alongside
videos the artists have taken. The French term montage referring to
composition, a cinematic term meaning a method of film editing, is a
typical filmic technique that enables its users to create fabricated space-time
through a selective rearrangement of space and time. The
aesthetic strategies adopted by participating artists are “montaging” in which
they quote, edit, and rearrange preexisting moving images in a new context and
“archiving” in which they have consistently selected such images. They de-familiarize
familiar images, bring forth new alternative narratives, and present new
meanings of identity, history, memory, power, fiction, reality, life, and
death, dialectically associating or striking together a multitude of moving
images, photos, and sounds in the process of archiving. Hosted by Coreana
